Sara had her pups last night, starting at 5:45pm. I went to check on her and she was just sitting in her bed, came back upstairs for a few minutes then went back down and there was a pup in the bed with her. I called Pat and he was on his way home, so for the next few hours I was with her making sure that everything was ok. It was pretty amazing to see her deliver the pups and get them cleaned up so quickly. Sara was comfortable enough with me that I was able to be in the bed with her and I was able to rub some of the pups to help get them breathing. She delivered three pups in about 30 minutes, took a break and had three more. She came upstairs and I thought she was done, but after a quick potty break she got back in the bed and had another one. After another break she had the last three, the last two were stillborn. So Sara has 8 puppies to deal with. She is very tired and it does take some prodding to get her off the couch to go potty and then I really have to coax her to get her in the bed to nurse, but once there she is fine with the pups on her. I will take them all to the vet this morning, my friend Sue is coming to watch the kids while I do that.
Kiera saw one of the puppies born, she thought it was really cool, yet gross at the same time. All the dogs are in the basement were it is nice and quiet and Sara can get outside easily. We are thinking we will move them upstairs tonight since it is a bit chilly in the basement, but I will double check with the vet and if it is not necessary then they can stay down there for a bit longer. Enjoy the pictures!
